Calm by Christmas: How to Leave Stress Behind and Enjoy the Season
If the very thought of Christmas has you feeling more bah humbug than holly jolly, you’re not alone. For so many of us, the festive season comes with a shedload of stress — juggling finances, family pressures, endless to-do lists, and the impossible search for the “perfect” Christmas.
But what if this year could be different?
What if, instead of running yourself ragged, you gave yourself the gift of calm?
I created Calm by Christmas because I’ve seen too many people (myself included, at times!) lose the joy of Christmas in all the pressure. It doesn’t have to be that way. With just a few small changes, you can go from feeling stressed and exhausted to calm, present, and ready to enjoy the magic of the season.

Here are some of my favourite tips to help you stay calm and centred this Christmas:
1. Redefine “Perfect”
Here’s the truth: perfect doesn’t exist. The Instagram-worthy tree, the flawlessly wrapped gifts, the picture-perfect family gathering — none of it is real. Trying to live up to those expectations will only drain your energy and rob you of joy.
Instead, ask yourself: What does a perfect Christmas look like for me? Maybe it’s a quiet evening with your favourite festive movie, or just having a moment to breathe between wrapping gifts. Focus on what matters most to you, and let go of the rest.
2. Set Boundaries Without Guilt
We’ve all been there: saying yes to events, commitments, and people we really want to say no to, because we feel guilty or afraid of disappointing them. But here’s the thing — every time you say “yes” to something that drains you, you’re saying “no” to your own peace.
This year, practise setting boundaries. It might sound like:
• “I’d love to help, but I just don’t have the time right now.”
• “We’re unable to make it this time, but let’s arrange something for the new year.”
Remember, protecting your energy isn’t selfish — it’s essential.
3. Simplify Your To-Do List
Holiday stress often comes from trying to do everything. The truth is, you don’t have to. Take a look at your to-do list and ask yourself:
• Does this really need to get done?
• Could I delegate this to someone else?
• What would happen if I just didn’t do this?
You might be surprised at how much you can let go of without losing what’s important.
4. Breathe Through the Chaos
When stress starts to creep in, take a moment to pause and breathe. Try this simple exercise:
1. Inhale deeply for 4 seconds.
2. Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
3. Exhale slowly for 8 seconds.
4. Repeat 3 times.
This only takes a minute, but it can completely reset your mood and help you face the next task with calm and clarity.
5. Focus on Small Moments of Joy
It’s easy to get so caught up in the hustle that we miss the magic of the season. This year, make it a point to notice the little things:
• The twinkle of Christmas lights.
• The warmth of a cozy cup of tea or hot chocolate.
• A laugh shared with someone you love.
These small moments are what make the season special, and they’re always there — even in the chaos.
6. Give Yourself Permission to Rest
Christmas can be exhausting if you don’t take time to rest. Give yourself permission to slow down, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day. A short walk, a hot bath, or even sitting quietly with your thoughts can make all the difference.
This Christmas, Choose Calm
The most important thing I’ve learned is that calm doesn’t just happen — it’s something we choose. It’s in the boundaries we set, the expectations we release, and the small moments of joy we allow ourselves to savour.
So this year, I invite you to join me in choosing calm. Let go of the pressure, embrace imperfection, and give yourself the gift of a peaceful, joyful Christmas.
Because you deserve it.
